Golfing in the Green Mountains
Sugarbush Resort
This summer Sugarbush is building a brand new 9-hole, beginner disc golf course at the top of Gadd Peak. The course can be accessed via the Super Bravo Express Quad and offers a variety of beginner holes situated around Allyn’s Lodge and beyond. This course accompanies the 18-hole disc golf course at the base of the mountain. In addition, the Sugarbush Resort Golf Club has purchased over $30,000 in new equipment, has added a new roof to the clubhouse and is introducing a new lineup of products at the pro shop.
Woodstock Inn & Resort
The Woodstock Inn & Resort announced the appointment of Matthew F. Closter as director of golf at the Woodstock Country Club. A Class A PGA Professional, Closter will have complete oversight of the golf operations at the Club. This includes management of the Robert Trent Jones Sr 18-hole championship course, including instructional programs and tournaments, as well as the revitalization of the retail and revenue centers. He will work closely with the Golf Course Superintendent to ensure pristine maintenance and responsible development of the historic course. He will also collaborate with the food and beverage team to maximize opportunities for corporate and social events.
Summer Activities and Attractions
Killington Resort
The Beast of the East kicks off summer operations while still spinning the Superstar Express Quad for skiing and snowboarding soft bumps (weather dependent) over Memorial Day Weekend. Enjoy sunny skies and multi-sport days featuring the Killington Golf Course, Snowshed Adventure Center, Killington Bike Park and top-to-bottom skiing and snowboarding on Vermont’s World Cup trail, Superstar, as the longest ski and ride season in the East rolls into late May or even June.
Stowe Mountain Resort
Enjoy Stowe Mountain Resorts newest addition, the Adventure Center and ‘Stowe Rocks’ climbing gym, this summer. Other exciting summer activities include Zip Lines down Vermont’s highest peak and a Tree Top Adventure Course with a series of 60 aerial tree-to-tree connections.
Okemo Mountain Resort
Okemo Mountain Resort is taking lift-served mountain biking to new heights this summer. A new two-mile flow trail that begins near the top of the Sunburst Six chairlift will wind its way through wooded areas and across winter ski trails. Construction of a second, more advanced summit trail is also scheduled to begin this summer. The Sunburst Six will be outfitted with racks for transporting mountain bikes. Visitors interested in embarking on a scenic chairlift ride will also be welcome to ride the comfortable bubble chairs that feature cushioned seats, foot rests and retractable, transparent domes. Moving upward, the full-service Evolution Bike Shop, featuring Scott bikes, will relocate to the mid-mountain Sugarhouse lodge starting this summer.
Burke Mountain
During the summer months, Burke Mountain transforms into a mountain biking mecca and outdoor adventure center. For the first time in history, they will offer trailside accommodations to the Burke Bike Park and Kingdom Trail network in the 116 room Burke Mountain Hotel and Conference Center conveniently situated mid-mountain. With free amenities like inside (secure) bike storage, an outdoor heated pool and hot tub and a fitness center, the Hotel is the perfect spot to begin and end the day. From mountain biking to hiking, kayaking to fishing, Burke’s little corner of the Northeast Kingdom is worth a visit this summer, not to mention it is home to some of the best vista views in the state of Vermont.
Smugglers’ Notch Resort
Families staying at Smugglers’ Notch this summer now have access to more fun than visitors can possibly pack into one day. Trapp Family Lodge
Located on the grounds of Trapp Family Lodge, the von Trapp Brewing Bierhall is open for its first summer. The Bierhall is a gathering place for friends to enjoy “a little of Austria, a lot of Vermont,” serving fresh lager beers and a selection of freshly prepared Austrian lunch and dinner selections. Many of the menu items are prepared on the wood-fired Parrilla grill that is the showcase feature of the Bierhall. Start and finish a mountain bike ride at the Bierhall Restaurant, and shop the well-appointed gift shop.
Ski and Snowboard Construction Projects
Middlebury College Snow Bowl
The Middlebury College Snow Bowl will be building two new race start buildings on the Allen and Ross trails this summer. These will not only reduce the amount of snowmaking currently required to achieve the necessary heights but will also enhance the comfort level of racers, starters and hand timers. Replacement of snowmaking pipe will continue this summer as well.
Mount Snow Resort
It will be a summer full of construction and improvements at Mount Snow. The resort will break ground on their new $20M 36,000 sq/ft lodge at Carinthia Parks. The lodge will have seating for 600 and will house a full-service cafeteria, restaurant, two bars and coffee counter, along with retail, ski school sales and rentals. But that’s not all, Mount Snow is also putting the finishing touches on their $30M West Lake Water Project, that is set to increase snowmaking storage capacity by 600 percent, allowing them to open more trails earlier than ever before.
Jay Peak Resort
Jay Peak Resort will spend $20 million this summer as it resumes the final phase of its revitalization initiative. The list of projects includes the completion of cottages around the resort’s Stateside area, and a 15,000-square foot recreation and entertainment center. New to the initiative’s lineup are two outdoor sports fields. The resort’s recreation and entertainment center will be located across from the Stateside Hotel. The 15,000-square foot facility will have a movie theater, a state-of-the-art arcade, and a Clip ‘n Climb ropes gym. The new cottages and recreation and entertainment center will open for the 2017-18 winter season. The new outdoor sports fields will come online in the summer of 2018.
Magic Mountain
SKI MAGIC LLC is investing $1 million in the off-season to continue the progress made this season revitalizing Magic Mountain. Capital investment focuses on expanding and improving snowmaking coverage and lift service, as well as enhancing Magic’s classic ski lodge experience. A major snowmaking project will begin this summer at the snow making pond to increase water volume, and in combination with new piping and hydrants, Magic will significantly expand snowmaking coverage to over 50% of its terrain. There will also be a new base to mid-mountain lift servicing intermediate and novice terrain which will allow Magic to open earlier than ever and allow non-advanced skiers easier access to Magic’s terrain without going all the way to the top via its Red and Black Summit chairs. In addition, a new magic carpet conveyor lift will be installed at Magic’s new Nelson Family Learn-to-Ski Center. The old beginner handle tow area will be transformed into an expanded terrain park/rail jam area, all viewable from Magic’s refurbished base lodge and Black Line Tavern.
Mad River Glen
In over twenty years of co-op ownership, Mad River Glen has invested more than $5 million in capital improvements. This summer, Mad River Glen will work to maintain and preserve what can already be found at the mountain. The new General Manager, Matt Lillard explains, “we don’t want to mess with a winning combination,” GM, Matt Lillard explains. The ability of Mad River Glen to consistently reinvest in the mountain’s infrastructure is a testament to the success of the Cooperative. Co-op share sales are always important.
